Google Site is easy to use. It is free and is accessible to anyone with a Google account. First, log on to Google Sites to create an account. After an account is created, your can begin creating your web site. No knowledge of Html is required. It is as easy a creating a document in which you can add images and embed documents.

The account holder can add e-mail addresses of individuals who will have access to editing privileges on the site. In short, what is being created is a group web site that allows interaction between group members.

The potential use of Google Sites for educators is beneficial to both educators and students. Teachers can create a classroom setting on their site. The site can include weekly spelling words, study guides, and practice problems. Links can be included which can include wiki sites. The site can also allow parent interaction with the teacher. For example, the teacher can have a conference with the parent if the parent is unable to come to school. However, make sure that you are actually in contact with the parent or guardian of the student.

Google Sites is a creation of Google.com. As in the case of other Internet pioneers, Goocle was conceived by two students while they were in college. In 1995, Larry Page and Sergy Brin met at Stanford. They did not like each other at their first meeting.. Both of them were Computer Science grad school majors. At that time, Stanford was using a search engine called Back Rub. The two grad students were not happy with Back Rub and decided to revamp it. They did. Back Rub was renamed Google which is s math term that means the number 1 followed by 100 zeros.

http://www.google.com/corporate/history.html
http://www.google.com/educators/p_apps.html

Social Media

Social Media

The online encyclopedia, Wikipedia Forever defines Social Media as a reference” to a collective group of web properties who’s content is primarily by users.”(1) In other words, the users are marketing products and services throughout the Internet. This source of free marketing can be accomplished through open forums and chat rooms. In addition, users can go to blogs and websites. They can leave comments, reviews, and rate products and services. Amazon.com and Ebay.com have a system where users can go and leave feedback on other members. Users can read the comments and decide if they want to purchase the product or service according to what other members have said.

Howard Rheingold is a College Professor who is an advocate of Social Media use in the classroom. In 1995, Rhiengold created a prototype for a virtual classroom. At the time of his conception, the cost of a Virtual Classroom was astronomical. However, within 13 years (2008) it cost almost nothing to create a Virtual Classroom. Currently, Rhiengold is working on a classrrom that incorporates all aspects of Social Media.

Since Rhiengold is a College Professor, he believes that the instructors, who are teaching the Digital Native Generation, should be able to understand the rhetoric that the students use and are accustomed to. Therefore, Rhiiengold is teaching his peers different aspects of Social Media. He is also helping his peers to choose the appropriate tools that the instructor can utilize for his particular class. Rhiengold believes that educators need to keep up with literacy that makes technology possible. Obviously, Rhiengold is teaching from the connectivist school of learning.

(1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media_marketing
http://www.blip.tv/file/1186946

Google Docs

Google Docs

Google Docs is an application on the Internet that allows users to create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. A feature of Goggle Docs is that it allows for online collaboration. The user can invite collaborators who can access the documents and edit the document. Other individuals can access the site and view the documents. These individuals cannot edit the document. Goggle Docs also allows for real time collaboration through a chat room. Google Docs can be accessed from a computer at any time from anywhere there is a internet connection Google Docs can upload documents and it can safely store these documents. A feature that I found unique about Google Docs is that Google Doc can translate an entire document into another language.

Google Docs can be a time saving tool. Instead of sending multiple copies of an e-mail a teacher, editor, or business person can create a document on Google Docs and invite participants to view the documents. Meetings can be arranged to work on the document if it is needed.

Overall, Google Docs is an ideal learning and teaching tool. All the essential elements that are needed to create and manage learning and teaching materials are located within Google Docs. Teachers and principals like Google Docs because it allows for more interactive lessons and student participation. Students can act as peer editors. College student and M.B.A. candidate,Jorge Zepervanche uses Google Docs as a study and organizational tool for his study group. A big advantage of Google Docs is that it saves time and reduces the use of paperwork because all of the tools, except perhaps the book, are in front of the student and teacher. The method of learning that Google Docs is incorporating is the connectivist school of learning. Students are using the latest updated applications that Google Docs has to offer on the site.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYPjJK6LZdM&feature=channel
http://www.google.com/educators/p_docs.html

Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking sites are sites in which you can store, organize and share with other people your favorite web sites. The most popular Social Bookmarking site is Delicious .

Delicious was founded in November of 2003. On December 9, 2005, Delicious was acquired by Yahoo. Delicious is a free site that anyone can use. To join, go to www.delicious.com and create an account. Yahoo users can use their Yahoo account. After your account is created you download the browser buttons that will allow you to copy and paste your chosen bookmarked sites to Delicious. Delicious also allows the user to tag the new bookmark so that it will be easier to retrieve when the user is looking for certain information. The tags act as keywords, similar to the Photo Sharing use of tags. Social Bookmarking sites allow other individuals to visit your site and have access to your bookmarks for their use. Thus, you can go to someone else’s Social Bookmark site and look at their bookmarks. This is a time saving tool since you will not waste unnecessary time looking at sites that are not suited for your use or taste.

Teachers can use Social Bookmarking sites as resources for other teachers and educators. The teacher can also leave additional resources for parent use. Social Bookmarking sites for classroom use can be created. For example, teachers can create a customized reference list of various sources for a particular topic. The class is studying about Egyptian Art. Students can go to the Social Bookmark site and view the sites and compile information for their assignments. This is a great tool for collaborative projects.
.
http://www.crunchbase.com/company/delicious
http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2006/12/01/social_bookmarking_services_and_tools.htm
http://www.education-world.com/a_tech/sites/sites080.shtml

Social Networking Sites

Social Networking

Social Networking sites are used primarily to expand an individual business and social connection using the internet. The site member invites their friends to join. Since you are now their friend, you can connect with their friends. Soon you have a network of friends. Two of the most popular Social Networking sites are MySpace and Facebbok.

Some social networking sites are created for individuals who special1ize in certain interest and topics. Foe example, Care2, is a site where people with like interest can network, organize, and get petitions signed for different causes. Other sites such as LinkedIn and Ryze are sites that specialized in connecting professional individuals together.

Social networking sites have been criticized within the media lately, especially regarding the safety of minors. There have been instances in which teen girls have been meeting older men through MySpace. These men are preying upon the young girls. Minors need to be aware of cybersafety. Tips for cybersafety can be found at http://www.connectsafely.org/safety-tips/cell-phonr-safety.html.

Some workplaces and professions do not approve of social networking sites. Some potential employers will check on social network site to check a potential employee. Last fall I was considering applying to an online state program to work on a teaching credential. I was informed that if I was on a social network site that I might consider closing my account. I did close my account, at least temporarily.

However, Christine Greenhow, a Learning Technology Researcher for the University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development, says that there is positive aspects of social networking sites. Greenhow says that students are learning skills that they will need for the 21st century. Technology skills are an important skill that the students are learning. Students are learning had to use the computer and how to use different applications that are available on the internet. Students are learning creativity by decorating and adding graphics to their MySpace pages. Students are being open to more and different idea. Lastly, students are learning to communicate.

http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci942884,00.html
http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/internet/archives/page9215.cfm
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/080620133907.htm

My assignments

This revolution will not be televised, it will be podcast!
From: Michael W. For my relatives who don't know why I am writing in a blog, here is why. It is required for my class. I have to put my answers here. These are the questions I am answering.

What is the definition of the term. Who invented it? how does it work? blah blah. How is it useful? Describe ways people can use it?

Lastly, how can teachers use it effectively? Find and give examples of it being used in classrooms. The last item I have to do is tell what school of learning the teacher is using. There are three school of learning, cognitivst, consructivist, and connectivist. I am not going to explain all three.

I hope my posting make some sense now.

Podcasting

Podcasting

Wikipedia defines podcasting as a term to describe a collection of technologies for automatically distributing audio and video programs on the Internet. Dave Winer and Adam Curry are considered the creators of the podcsting phenomena. Back in 2001, the two discussed that there had to be a better method of delivering audio and video files on the Internet. Winer felt that a XML format called Really Simple Syndication was the solution they were seeking. Thus, Winer introduced the RSS enclosure tag into RSS 2.0 specification. However, a real breakthrough came when during the Fall of 2004 Adam Curry made his iPodder software public. iPodder allowed users to automatically download and transfer MP3 to an iPod.

Shortly thereafter, in the Spring of 2005, Apple released iTunes v4.9. iTunes v4.9 offered support services to subscribing to podcast and also included a top 100 list of podcast. Not only can you subscribe to podcast on iTunes, but if you are podcaster you can put a link of your podcast and accumulate subscribers also.

Podcast can be as diverse as individuals are. For example, podcast exist on music, news, sports, and other genres. Educators are beginning to see the potential of podcasting. In 2006, Duke University was already using podcasting classes, lectures, and visiting speakers.

The use of podcasting in the classroom is endless. Since podcasting is the use of spoken language, it is a suitable tool for learning. Students can hold interviews, talk about research, interpret news stories, read aloud, and respond to literature. The Mills Mufer Podcast is a 2nd grade class doing a Civil War unit. Music is included along with the students verbal presentations. The teacher who is leading the Mills Mufer Podcast is using the connectivist school of learning. The teacher is using rapidly changing technology and is using this technology to motivate her students by having the students actively participate.

Me Read? No Way! Is a publication that supports the use of podcasting to improve reading literacy in boys Me Read? No Way! gives additional tips and advice on improving boys literacy. In summary, educators and learners are going to put their creative ideas to use to enhance learning experiences using podcasts as an educational tool

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast
http://chatt.hdsb.ca/~elses/boylit/Podcasting%20in%20Education
http://chatt.hdsb.ca/~elses/boylit/edweek%20article.pdf
http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/document/brochure/meread/meread.pdf

Onlne Photo Sharing

Online Photo Sharing

Online photo sharing is a method of saving and sharing photos on the World Wide Web. Photos are uploaded to a server and can be organized on the site. A common method of organizing the photos is through the use of tags. Tags are key words or categories that apply to a particular photo.. For example, you have a picture of your pet cat that is named Goldie. You took the photo while you were on vacation at Yosemite in 2008. The tags you can use are pet, cat, Goldie, vacation, Yosemite, 2008.

The sharing method of the photos is at the discretion of the user. Photos can be viewed privately or be open to the public. Currently, most of the online photo sharing sites also offer photo printing and finishing services.

The advantages to online photo sharing are that they provide a wider audience of viewers to your photos. Online photo sharing sites can keep your photos safe since they can act as a backup storage system of your photos. Online photo sharing can also eliminate the photo album books that can accumulate. However, there is one disadvantage to online photo sharing. You may not be aware of who is viewing your photos, nor what someone is doing with your photo unless you have your photos set for private viewing exclusively.

The use of online photo sharing for educators is numerous. Educators can post photos from professional training sessions and conferences. The educator can create a collection of stock photos that can be later incorporated into classroom lessons. The encouragement of online photo sharing amongst professional peers can create a network of resources that can benefit learners and educators.

M.J. Page, a teacher in Ontario, Canada, has used photos to inspire writing, to reflect, and to raise a question. She has also used photos as slideshow presentations. Blogger, Accessible Educational Technology, has also used photos as writing prompts. She provides the photo and a word bank. Students than proceed to do the assignment. She finds that this approach works well with science. Both of these educators are using the constructivist school of learning. The use of online photo sharing sites allows students to construct information that is meaningful to them.

http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/photo+sharing+site
http://www.teachinghacks.com/wiki/index.php?title=Photo_Sharing_in_Education
http://mjpageeducation.blogspot.com/2009/02/accessible-educational-technology.html

Who Is Henry Jenkins?

New Media and Henry Jenkins

Webopedia defines New Media as a generic term for the many different forms of electronic communication that are made possible through the use of computer technology.[1] I became aware of the term “New Media” when I was employed as a Student Assistant at the computer lab at California State University- Long Beach. It was ironic that I found myself working in a computer lab since I had made a vow 10 years earlier to stay away from those ‘stupid idiot machines”

In 1984, as part of meeting my electives for my major, I enrolled in Computer Information Systems. We had to go to the lab and log onto a computer. I could not log on. My password would not work. I did not ask for any assistance. Needless to say, I dropped the class. Fast forward 1995.

The lab were I worked was for student use. There was also a lab that was available for CSULB faculty and staff use. I proceeded to spend time in the faculty lab and I enrolled in classes that were exclusively for the staff. The purpose of these classes was to introduce the use of the computer to enhance student learning using electronic media. This time I was able to log on to a computer. As a result, I began exploring the various software programs that I had access to. I was hooked, and I was fortunate to be connected to the beginning of New Media technology at CSULB.

Henry Jenkins can be considered as an early pioneer of New Media. Henry is director of MIT’s Comparative Media Department. Henry has described that Comparative Media is a major to consider if you do not know what to major in since we as individuals are exposed to different forms of media on a daily basis.

Henry is also the author of 9 books on the subject of media and popular culture. Mr. Jenkins is a proponent of computer and video games. He believes that video games can be used as educational resources. Jenkins supports the work of Project New Media Literacies whose goal is to make sure that every child in America has skills to participate in a networked society.

The video shows Jenkins speaking on New Media and education. Mr. Jenkins feels that there is unnecessary censorship in the schools. Many schools have blocking of sites which may contain certain key words. An example that Jenkins gives is the word “dick’. Students who are researching Moby Dick may not have access to sites where information relevant to the topic may be available. In a situation such as this, I would try to redirect the student to an alternative source or have other sources available. This is another situation where teachers need to be careful and they need to respect the rights of the parents especially when it concerns sexual content.
Another opinion of Jenkins is that he feels that students are restricted to using the latest technology in the classrooms. He is making reference in this instance to the use of I-Pods. I personally do not like the use of I-Pods in the class. I find that they are distracting. They are not allowed at Hesperia and Phelan schools. However, some teachers do allow them in the class, even though the district policies prohibit their use. I do not want to be responsible when an I-Pod is stolen or when a fight breaks out over an I-Pod. I have been a witness in both situations and it was not pleasant. It was a situation that could have been avoided if the I-Pods were not at school

1. http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/new_media.html
http://henryjenkins.org/aboutme.html
http://newmedialiteracies.org/

Virtual Classrooms

Virtual Classrooms

In 1993-94, I was enrolled at VVC. I was fortunate to have Professor Eric Mayer as a History teacher. Professor Mayer had predicated that sometime in the near future we would not have to leave our home to go to school. How right Professor Mayer was! The age of the Virtual Classroom was arriving.
Virtual Classrooms are classrooms and schools that are done online and through the use of the Internet. The video is stressing the use of Virtual classrooms for High School students. Virtual classrooms are being used to meet the needs of specific students who might need a customized curriculum. They are also being used as tools to fill in gaps at schools were there may be a lack of qualified teachers to teach a subject. For example, there may be a lack of qualified French teachers in a school district, but through virtual classrooms a qualified teacher may be able to teach a class online for the district. The teacher can meet with her students at a scheduled time and be available at a later time for additional assistance if needed. Virtual classrooms can meet the needs of students who might need an individualized study program from home. Students can log on from anywhere there is an. Internet connection and do their required classwork.
From my experience, working in various schools throughout the High Desert, Hybrid classes are becoming a reality. http://www.starfall.com/ is a reading site that encourages reading through the use of Phonics. This site offers reading games that are suitable for preschoolers through 3rd grade. Some teacher’s use this site as an enrichment activity or as a reward incentive. There is potential in Hybrid learning, but as with any type of instruction, proper supervision is required. Teachers should not put students on computers just to get students out of the way. There should be a rationale for student use on the computer.

http://www.starfall.com/

                  HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!

Wikis

Wikis

In 2007, E-learnining consultant , Clive Shepard discussed the difference between a blog and a wiki. According to Shepard, a blog can be described as a personal space where an individual can post a subjective opinion. Other individuals can post an opinion on a bloggers site. Entries on a blog are listed in a chronological order. Blogs can not be edited or updated.

In contrast, a wiki is a collaborative space for objectifying knowledge. Wikis can be open to anyone or can be restricted by membership. Wikis contain learning archives that can be referred to at a later date. An important aspect is that they are editable and allow more interaction between participants.

The first wiki site was created by Ward Cunningham for the Portland Pattern Repository. It was created in 1995. It was founded as an automated supplement to the Portland Pattern Repository site. The site was an immediate success to the pattern community. Ward says he can trace early wiki ideas to the 1980’s with programs written in HyperCard. As of March 25 2005, Portland Pattern Repository maintains 30690 pages on its site.

Mrs Pollit, a 5th grade teacher posted a comment on Preocupations. Mrs Pollit uses a wiki in her classroom to post a thought provoking question of the week. Each student is required to post an answer to the question. Mrs Pollit also uses an Online Journal. The journal has an individual link customized for each student. Students use the wiki to write their stories. The wiki allows other students to read and comment on the students work. Mrs Politt useshttp://www.pbwiki.com/ as her wiki site. The school of learning that Mrs Pollit is using to teach her students by using a wiki is consructivist. The learners are conceptualizing information and applying information as they learn by participation in the writing process.

As an educator, I can see the potential of using the wiki in a classroom setting. Some schools in Hesperia use CGI Math. CGI Math is a class collaborative effort. Students must come up with different solutions to solving math word problems. The wiki tool would be a great asset to use in CGI Math.

Resouces:
http://clive-shepherd.blogspot.com/2007/04/one-more-time-whats-difference-between.html
http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiHistory
http://www.preoccupations.org/preoccupations/2004/05/using_wikis_in_.html

Blogs

Blogs

The Free Dictionary.com defines blog as:
n. a weblog
int.v blogged, blogging, blogs
To write entries in, add material to, or maintain a weblog

Blogs are still a relatively new concept. The advent of blogging can be attributed to Justin Hall. Hall was a student at Swathmore College. In 1994, Hall started an online diary on his web site. Justin’s diary featured daily entries which became the standard and practice for future blog sites.

In 1997 Jorn Barger used the term “web log”. Barger had categorized the web by using links on his web site. Later the term “web log” was shortened to “blog’. However, during this period, the majority of bloggers on the web, had technical computer knowledge and understanding of HTML.

Shortly, sites began to be launched that featured hassle-free blogging. These new sites allowed potential bloggers the tools to have access to blogging without the knowledge of HTML or technical knowledge of the computer. All that was required to use these sites is basic computer knowledge and an e-mail account.

Blogger and Educator,Will Richardson maintains and manages his site titled Weblogg-ed.com. Weblogg-ed.com offers K-12 educators the tools and incentives to use the different technical media together and create linking networks. A fairly new concept in education that pertains to writing is Connective+Writing. Connective +Writing is the ability to publish using the different media. Teaching students this method of writing will enable students to function in the 21st century.

The school of learning that Richardson is using is connectivism. He is introducing educators to up to date information and to the methodology of using new media in the classroom setting.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Blogs
http://www.life123.com/technology/internet/blogs/the-history-of-blogging.shtml?fcsource=gadwords&gclid=CLeT7__Y5p0CFSReagodNEsLMA#STS=g1g0l5wx.16vd
http://weblogg-ed.com/about/
http://weblogged.wikispaces.com/Connective+Writing</span

Web Search Stategies

Web Search Strategies

Search engines are software programs that assist with the retrieval of information from the World Wide Web. Search engines are huge data bases of web pages that are assembled and managed by machines.
There are two types of search engines available.
1. Individual search engines. Individual search engines complete their own searches on the web. These sites use software programs that follow links on web page and put the text into a database. When you use the site, you are searching the database.
2. Metasearch engines. These types of engines search other sites. They will bring results all at the same time. An example of a metasearch engine is Metacrawler.
There are search engines that will specialize in doing a particular search. For example, Lycos will help you search for images, Ask Jeeves allows you to type in an actual question, Dogpile will search 26 databases al at once. One of the most popular and oldest Web-based directory is Yahoo! Yahoo! was launched in 1994 and it is a basic site to begin a search.
Jerry Yang was a Electrical Engineering major at Stanford. He was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1968. At the age of eight, along with his mother, he immigrated to the United States. They settled in San Jose, California. Within three years, Jerry had mastered the English language. As a result, he was placed in AP English classes.
In 1994, Jerry and David Filo created a web site called Jerry and David’s Guide to the World Wide Web. The purpose of this site was to act as a directory to other web sites. Jerry and David later renamed their site Yahoo! Today Yahoo! is one of the most heavily used sites on the Internet.
Teacher Richard Byrne specializes in teaching web search strategies. At the beginning of the academic year, Byrne conducts staff development workshops. He utilizes the Boolean Logic Tutorial and he uses the Common Craft video on Web Search Strategies that our instructor uses in our class. Byrne likes using the Common Craft video because it is simple to understand.
Byrne is using learning strategies from the constructivist school of thought. His students are interpreting information through their own realities and through observation. His students are also able to process the information by practicing immediate application of the techniques being taught.

http://www.sc.edu/beaufort/library/pages/bones/bones.shtml
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Yang_(entrepreneur)
http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2009/01/teaching-internet-search-strategies.html
http://www.internettutorials.net/boolean.asp

Hello everyone

Have a Boo-tiful day

World Wide Web

World Wide Web

According to Webopedia, the World Wide Web is a system of Internet Servers that support specially formatted documents.(1) Documents are formatted in a markup language called Hyper Text Markup Language, or HTML. HTML allows other documents, graphics, audio and video files to link to the site. Access to the World Wide Web is possible through the use of specific applications called Web Browsers.
The development of the World Wide Web can be attributed to an English graduate of Oxford University. In 1980, Tim Berners- Lee went to work as a temporary employee of the Geneva based firm of CERN. He was hired to work as a software consultant. While Berners-Lee was at CERN he wrote a program titled Enquire. The purpose of Enquire was to serve as an “memory substitute” to Berners-Lee. Berners-Lee assignment was completed. However, he did return in 1984.
Upon his return to CERN, Berners-Lee had a vision. Berners-Lee vision consisted of linking information that was stored on computers. Luckily, for Berners-Lee, two technologies were available that enabled Berners-Lee to achieve his vision. An article titled, As We May Think was written in 1945 by Vannevar Bush. Bush described a theoretical system for the storage of information. The storage of the information was based on association. Another technology that influenced the development of the World Wide Web, was the advent of hypertext.
